WHO WE ARE

PRODUCERS OF ORGANIC AND NON-GMO HYBRID SEED CORN.

The Mantey family has roots in the seed business dating back to 1921 when Fritz Mantey produced his first crop of seedcorn near Fairgrove, MI. Since that beginning, the Mantey family has produced a seed crop on the same farm every year. In 1985, Ed Mantey and Sons, Inc. was formed by Ed Mantey (Fritz’s son) along with his sons Don and Bob. As a way to continue the legacy of quality seed production, Ken Janson joined the operation and Saginaw Valley Seedcorn Producers, LLC was formed in 2017.

Saginaw Valley Seedcorn Producers, LLC is located on the edge of Michigan’s Saginaw Valley in Tuscola County. The Saginaw Valley lays claim to being one of the most fertile agricultural valleys in the world. The primary crop grown by SVSP is hybrid seedcorn, accounting for 600 to 700 acres out of the total 950 acres farmed. Approximately three-quarters of the total seedcorn production is organic with the remainder being non-GMO conventional seed. Overhead irrigation is used on over 350 acres of the non-organic land.

Seed Production

The main focus of SVSP is to produce quality, hybrid non‑GMO conventional and organic seedcorn. Natural boundaries and numerous surrounding organic farms create ideal isolation for our seedcorn fields. With varying field sizes, we are able to accommodate most requests for small to large lot sizes.

Crop Rotation

Utilizing predictable crop rotations allows us to keep our land fertile and healthy. Both our conventional and organic land cycles through a three-year rotation, which includes soybeans, dry beans, wheat, spelt, and rye. We also see the benefit of using cover crops such as mammoth clover, winter peas, tillage radish, and cereal rye at different stages throughout the three-year rotation.
